Drive now, pay later

I’m rich… if the definition is that I don’t have to pay for gas in installments.

I’m not sure if this is a brand new blockade trend or not, but the reality is that a lot of families can’t afford to fill up the tank. The Labour government had a pretty generous EV subsidy, but 2 1/2 years ago we voted in a coalition of pro-petroleum, anti-woke etc and they took that away. They also added extra Road User fees to EVs (since they don’t pay gas taxes). Unfortunately that meant fewer people sprung for electric cars.

Now that the price of fuel has jumped (basically all our oil comes through the Strait of Hormuz), that same government is offering $50 per week to certain needy families… specifically those receiving a particular welfare benefit and who are most likely to vote for them. I wonder how many more EVs, and therefore how much less petrol we’d need, we would have if the subsidy had just stayed in place.
