On Tuesday as I came home from pétanque my phone jingled. Facebook alert. It was from a community chat set up to alert us when dolphins or whales are spotted nearby.
And there they were! It was the biggest pod of dolphins I’ve ever seen, at least 20. For the next three hours they cruised in and out of view. They jumped and looped and swam on their sides. At one point they went right in close to the beach to give the spectators a treat.
I was so entranced that I completely missed a work related call. Ugh. But kinda worth it too.
As with trying to photograph the moon, they looked way bigger to my eyes than in this picture (actually a still from video). I don’t do enough photography to actually want a massive big professional camera with an NFL-quality zoom lens… but at that moment I did want one.
In our one year here, we’ve only seen dolphins a few times, and all in the depths of winter. Hopefully the water quality and fishing rules will be maintained and even strengthened so they’ll be coming around even more.
